Edward Ivan Richardson was born on Sept. 8, 1951, in St. Peter, Minn., the son of James and Helen (Ahlstrom) Richardson. He resided with his family in Le Sueur, Minn., until the age of 5, when he moved with his family to Whiting, Iowa. He attended school in Whiting and graduated from Whiting High School in 1970. Following high school, he did an apprenticeship in fire sprinkler systems with Local 669.

Ed was united in marriage to Sue Lawrence on Sept. 4, 1971, in Onawa, Iowa. They made their home in Colorado and then back in Iowa. In 1976, they moved to Le Mars. Ed worked for more than 40 years in the fire sprinkler system industry, 10 years of which he owned and operated his own company, Dependable Fire Protection. He retired in 2011.

He was an active member of Merrill United Methodist Church, where he served on several boards. He was also a member of Local 669 Union. Through the years, he enjoyed golfing, working on cars, woodworking, gardening, and putting puzzles together. But most of all, he loved the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandson.
