Edward Ivan Richardson was born on Sept. 8, 1951, in St. Peter, Minn., the son of James and Helen (Ahlstrom) Richardson. He resided with his family in Le Sueur, Minn., until the age of 5, when he moved with his family to Whiting, Iowa. He attended school in Whiting and graduated from Whiting High School in 1970.
