Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Brown, 57, of Waterloo, formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa, of natural causes.
Services were held Nov. 7 at the Blue Hill Cafe in Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
She was born on Feb. 8, 1960, at Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, the daughter of Minister Percy L. Brown and Mary S. Hollingsworth Brown.
Mary graduated from Waterloo Central High School in 1978, attended Luther College, Decorah, and Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, and graduated from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. She also earned her CDL credentials in Sioux City. Mary worked at The Villa in Sioux City, then took administrative positions at MCI, Gateway Computers, Jolly Time Popcorn and Hy-Vee Foods. She also was employed by Sioux City Community Schools.
She was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City. She also was a member of the Iowa Conservatory of Music, member of the Lunch Bunch musical ensemble, soloist for the three professional sports franchises, toured the Midwest region with a musical chorale, starred in several productions with the Sioux City Lamb Theater, was featured soloist at the Sioux City Tyson Event Center and performed the jingle for a national insurance campaign.
Mary was celebrated as Woodbury County's premier theater performer. She gave her life to the Lord early in life and practiced her faith openly by singing the Lord’s praises in her church and throughout her community.
She is survived by her parents; a daughter, Mary D. Brown of Sioux City; a brother, Percy L. Brown of Triangle, Va.; a sister, Jeanette Brown-Higgins of Conyers, Ga.; many nieces and nephews; and her surrogate parents, Bill and Mural Lyles of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Elige and Frances V. Brown; her maternal grandparents, John and Roxie Hollingsworth; a sister, Annette Brown-Jenkins; and a brother, Dennis Brown Sr.
