Melvin F. "Mel" Greckel, 72, of Hubbard, formerly of West Point, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at his home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point, with the Rev. Steven Emanuel as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery with lunch following at the Nielsen Center. Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 5 p.m., at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point.
Mel was born on Aug. 10, 1945, in West Point, to Leonard and Dorothy (Hudec) Greckel. He attended Guardian Angels Catholic School, graduating in 1963.
In November 1963, Mel married Jean Feyerherm at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point. The couple divorced in 1969. On Aug. 12, 1971, Mel married Karen Tonjes at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bancroft, Neb. The couple divorced in 1990. Mel worked in the food service industry while living in Omaha from 1971 to 1991, when he moved to Hubbard. He retired in 2010.
Mel was an avid card player and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his retirement, he enjoyed feeding and caring for the neighborhood cats.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandy (Tom) Keck of Omaha; son, Darin (Debbie) Greckel of Omaha; sisters, Donna (Layne) Landanger of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Bev (Mark) Batenhorst of Omaha; grandchildren, Katie (Cory) Rohlfsen, Jon Keck, and Paige, Hunter and Pierce Greckel; great-grandchildren, Greyson Packett and Charlotte Rohlfsen; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Debby Greckel in 1974; and brothers, Gary, Dan, and Ron.
Memorials will be directed to the family for later designation.
