His childhood years were spent in Miami and Sioux City, where he received his education. Burdette entered the military in 1946 and served with the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1949.

Burdette married Vivian Quist on April 11, 1951. After their marriage, they lived in Spencer, where he worked as a grocery clerk for Super Valu and Swanson Grocery Stores.

He was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, DAV and the Blind Veterans Association. Burdette was also a member of the Lions Club in Spencer.
