STORM LAKE | A criminal charge has been filed against a Storm Lake teen who police accuse of sexually assaulting his girlfriend last year.
The 16-year-old was charged with felony sexual abuse. Storm Lake police in a statement said they were contacted on Nov. 25 about the assault, which occurred in September 2013. The girlfriend was 14 at the time, police said.
Police did not give a reason for the delay.
Assistant police chief Todd Erskine said the police department worked closely with the juvenile court system, the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), the Buena Vista County Attorney's office and Youth Homes of Mid-America to complete the investigation before charging the suspect.
The teen charged is being held at a Johnston, Iowa, youth facility.
