STORM LAKE, Iowa | Police said a Storm Lake man assaulted his girlfriend in front of her 18-month-old child and that his brother later prevented her from calling for help.
Storm Lake police said in a release that Aihlee Jamad Boutte, 18, forced his girlfriend and her child into a bathroom in a home in the 300 block of West 7th Street and assaulted and choked her.
Boutte’s brother, Faheem Jamal Boutte, 22, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and two other men broke into the bathroom, freeing the victim and child and escorted them to a convenience store in the 200 block of West Milwaukee Avenue, police said.
While at the store the victim attempted to call 911 on her cellphone, but Faheem Boutte took her phone, preventing her from making the call, and left the store, police said.
Police arrived at the store, where Aihlee Boutte was seen approaching the parking lot and was taken into custody. Faheem Boutte was taken into custody near the intersection of West 7th and Geneseo streets.
Aihlee Boutte faces a felony charge of domestic assault with strangulation causing bodily harm and misdemeanor charges of child endangerment, false imprisonment and assault. An investigation revealed that he was wanted by Storm Lake police on an outstanding warrant for fifth-degree theft in an unrelated incident.
Faheem Boutte faces a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of emergency communication. Police also learned he was wanted by Buena Vista County on a warrant for contempt of court.
The victim was treated by paramedics at the Storm Lake police station for injuries suffered in the assault, police said.
The child was not reported to have suffered any injuries.
