Video game challenge winner

North High School student Carter Gerritson was a winner of the National STEM Video Game Challenge, which encourages middle and high schools students to use science, technology, engineering, and math by tapping into their natural love of video games. Gerritson won the Gamestar Mechanic category for his game Earth 2112. An original game, Earth 2112 investigates the disappearance of the human race in a post-apocalyptic future. His game was one of the 17 games selected from a group of over 3,700 entries. Gerritson was recognized at an awards ceremony on May 21 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

National competition

SHELDON, Iowa | Students from Northwest Iowa Community College competed in the 2012 Iowa State Skills USA Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa on April 26-27. The following students who received first place have earned the right to advance to the National SkillsUSA Leadership Conference to be held in Kansas City June 23–27.

Woodbury County 4-H Foundation

Five outstanding senior 4-H members were chosen to receive the Woodbury County 4-H Foundation educational incentive. This year’s outstanding seniors are:

Mark Rippke, a 2012 graduate of Woodbury Central High School will attend Iowa State University in the fall and major in civil engineering.

Brooke Baird, a 2012 graduate of Woodbury Central High School will attend the University of South Dakota in the fall and major in health sciences.

Jared McCoy, a 2012 homeschool graduate will attend Morningside College in the fall and major in agronomy.

Kaitlyn Brady, a 2012 graduate of Bishop Heelan High School will attend the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in the fall and major in computer engineering.

Amy Widman, a 2012 homeschool graduate will attend Morningside College in the fall and major in business and mass communication.

Dr. Sarah Barchinger received her doctorate of philosophy in biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology from Penn State University on May 6.
