SIOUX CITY | Morningside College students and officials on Friday collected messages of support and encouragement for those who had families and friends affected by recent hurricanes and the Mexican earthquake.

Spurred by Morningside Chaplain Andy Nelson, the collection of the messages took place midday at the Olsen Student Center. Nelson said it was important to remember that once the disasters are over a long period of recovery continues.

"Even as Hurricane Irma pushed Harvey out of the news, the folks in Texas are just beginning the hard work of recovery. As Hurricane Maria has pushed Irma out of the news, the folks in Florida are still trying to find a new normal, etc. This is true for all these disasters," Nelson wrote in an email to students.

Students and others left messages on note cards, which will be routed to Morningsiders who know people impacted by the natural disasters.
