DES MOINES | Conservative activists campaigning to defeat Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins in Iowa’s Nov. 6 judicial retention vote are enlisting the help of some big-name Republicans.

Leaders of Iowans for Freedom, a project of the Pleasant Hill-based Family Leader organization, announced Tuesday that former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum -- who won the Iowa caucus in January -- and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will participate in a statewide “No Wiggins” bus tour designed to focus opposition to judicial activism.

Santorum will remain in Iowa to join the tour for a kickoff event in Des Moines on Sept. 24 and appear at events in Pella and Ottumwa. Jindal is expected to join the bus tour for stops on Sept. 26, organizers said.

Santorum is also headlining a Sept. 20 celebration of the U.S. Constitution's 225 anniversary in Sioux City, sponsored by Patriot Voices and the Conservative Alliance of Iowa.

“The judiciary’s usurpation of authority in recent years is completely unacceptable,” Santorum said in a statement. “It is obviously clear the people’s Constitution gives the judicial branch the least power, and yet these appointed judges continuously legislate from the bench whether it is gay marriage in Iowa, collective bargaining in Wisconsin, or resulting in the death of millions of lives caused by the opinion of Roe v. Wade.”

The “No Wiggins” bus tour -- sponsored by CitizenLink, Patriot Voices, the Family Leader, the National Organization for Marriage and CatholicVote.org -- seeks to mobilize opposition among Iowa voters to oust Wiggins.

Wiggins is one of seven justices who issued a unanimous decision in April 2009 ruling the state’s one-man, one-woman marriage law unconstitutional, effectively legalizing civil marriages between partners of the same gender. A similar opposition effort in 2010 led to the removal of former Iowa Supreme Court Justices Marsha Ternus, Michael Streit and David Baker, following their defeats in retention votes that election cycle.

“Iowans and the American people not only expect but deserve restoring integrity in our courts,” said Bob Vander Plaats, state chairman of Iowans for Freedom. “That was obvious in November 2010 when Iowans spoke with a clear, loud voice not to retain three Iowa Supreme Court justices.”

Countering the anti-Wiggins effort is the newly formed Justice Not Politics Action group, led by former Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson, which is advocating for all of the Iowa justices and judges who will be up for retention in the Nov. 6 general election.

Zach Wahls, 21, of Iowa City, who gained national attention for a 2011 Statehouse speech about his two moms, made appearances last weekend urging Iowans to confirm all the judges whose names are listed on the back of November’s ballot. “There’s some folks here who are trying to use our retention process to scare and intimate Iowa judges and we can’t let that happen,” Wahls told more than 1,000 people at U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin’s annual steak fry fundraiser in Indianola Sunday afternoon.

The “No Wiggins” bus tour, which begins at the state Capitol on Monday, will span four days with stops in 17 Iowa communities. Appearances in Sioux City, Spencer and Orange City are planned on Sept. 27.
