State gambling regulators on Thursday awarded a gaming contract to turn the Battery Building in Sioux City into a casino and hotel. The 323 Water St. building has an extensive history.
1906: Building is created for E. C. Simmons Co., a St. Louis cutlery manufacturer.
1944: Ownership changes to Sioux City Battery Co.
1973: Becomes offices and warehouses for retailer Bomgaars.
2007: Developers propose turning structure into condominiums. The plan eventually is dropped.
2008: Building is added to National Register of Historic Places.
Thursday: Gaming regulators select developer to turn building into Hard Rock Casino & Hotel.
