SIOUX CITY | Police were investigating a single-vehicle accident in Sioux City on Wednesday afternoon that claimed the life of a 64-year-old woman.
Officer Jeremy McClure said the Sioux City woman, whose identity was not immediately released, was seen driving fast on Military Road when her car struck a retaining wall at the corner of George and West 21st streets.
Military Road becomes West 21st Street at the corner.
The vehicle was pinned between a utility pole and the wall. The woman had to be extricated from the vehicle, McClure said. There were no other occupants.
The accident happened about 2:25 p.m., according to a release issued later by the Sioux City Police Department.
The woman was headed east in a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu when the car hit a curb just before the intersection, the release said. The car crossed the intersection and struck the wall on the southeast corner of the intersection.
The woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital with what McClure called "significant" injures. Police later reported she had died.
Speed appeared to be a factor in the incident, the release said.
