IOWA CITY, Iowa | Police said Zach McCabe, a Bishop Heelan graduate and former forward for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team, was arrested Friday on a misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury.

According to court documents, McCabe was involved in an argument with a woman early Friday morning in DC's Bar in Iowa City. The alleged victim attempted to separate McCabe and the woman before being punched in the face by McCabe.

After the victim fell to the ground, McCabe blew him a kiss as he walked out of the bar, the documents, filed in Johnson County District Court, said.

The incident occurred at 12:10 a.m., and McCabe was arrested at 2:49 p.m., Iowa City police Lt. Troy Kelsay said.

McCabe posted bail and was released from the Johnson County Jail at 4:45 p.m., a jail employee said.

When reached by phone Friday evening, McCabe said, "No comment," and hung up.

University of Iowa Head Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery released a statement saying: “It is my understanding that senior Zach McCabe was involved in an altercation last night in Iowa City. After collecting all the facts, I will deal with this situation when I return next week.”
