SIBLEY, Iowa | A man was found dead near railroad tracks a half-mile north of Sibley on Monday morning, officials said.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement it responded to a call about suspicious items on the tracks at about 8:30 a.m.
Upon investigation, authorities determined an unidentified man had fallen from the train and been run over.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. The tracks are owned and operated by Union Pacific Railroad.
Mark Davis, a spokesman with Union Pacific, said three trains traveled through the area where the man was found in the 12 hours before the railroad was notified of the death.
“All those trains were stopped and inspected,” Davis said. The recordings from the cameras on the front of each train were downloaded and are being reviewed.
The sheriff’s office, Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and Union Pacific Police were continuing to investigate the matter Monday afternoon. No additional information was immediately released.
