WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Police in Waterloo say a standoff lasting several hours in ended when a man shot himself.

The standoff occurred Tuesday near the Cedar River at North Hackett Road.

Police say 43-year-old Johnny Dixon assaulted his ex-girlfriend over the weekend, but managed to get away from police. Police later got a tip that someone had spotted Dixon near a bike trail. When officers found him, he threatened to shoot himself.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Dixon shot himself. Paramedics took him to a local hospital. He was then airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in critical condition.
