SIOUX CITY | A town hall meeting is planned Nov. 23 to discuss substance abuse among the homeless and Native American communities in Sioux City.
The meeting will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Four Directions Community Center, 613 Water St. Sioux City Police Chief Doug Young, Woodbury County Sheriff Dave Drew and Native activist Frank LaMere will facilitate the session.
In Sioux City, Natives account for 48 percent of arrests for public intoxication, a disproportionate number, according to police data.
Officials said they expect to discuss the possible effectiveness of a Native drug treatment program or halfway house in the community.
The former Native American Alcohol Treatment Program funded by the Indian Health Service closed in 2005.
The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska Health Department, Mercy Medical Center and the Sioux City Human Rights Commission will co-host the session.
