ONAWA, Iowa -- Officials in the western Iowa town are in talks with the Army Corps of Engineers about building a levee to protect critical infrastructure.

They tell the Journal need for a levee isn't certain, but are advising residents today to remove items from basements and plug drains.

The rising Missouri River could pose a threat to the town following a heavy rain, town officials believe.

Journal reporter Tim Gallagher is returning from Onawa with more information, which we'll have online this afternoon as it becomes available.
