CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — A former Girl Scout leader in Centerville has been charged with stealing over $12,000 from her troop.

The Daily Iowegian ( ) says 30-year-old Heather Benjamin, of Centerville, is charged with first-degree theft. According to the criminal complaint, Benjamin used the troop's bank account as her personal account between October 2011 and the end of August. Police say she made over 150 transactions at restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs.

The newspaper says the troop held two sales since last fall, raising over $17,000 from selling cookies, nuts and magazines.

There is no attorney listed for Benjamin on the online court system. Her preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 19 in Appanoose County District Court.
