DES MOINES | A Hospers, Iowa, social worker charged with having an improper relationship with a former client has voluntarily surrendered her social work license.

Briana Van Der Zwaag admitted to the allegations before the Iowa Board of Social Work and agreed to turn in her license, according to documents filed with the board Monday. She may not request reinstatement of her license for five years.

The board in August filed a notice of charges accusing Van Der Zwaag of beginning a romantic relationship with a former client shortly after ending their therapeutic relationship.
