SIOUX CITY | Area families are expected to finalize adoptions of their children at an Adoption Day celebration Nov. 18 at the Woodbury County Courthouse.

The event, celebrated as part of November's National Adoption Month, is scheduled for 10 a.m. It is one of nine similar events happening across Iowa this month and is planned in partnership by the Iowa Department of Human Services and Lutheran Services of Iowa.

Events like the one in Sioux City involve courts, judges, attorneys, adoption professionals, child welfare agencies and advocates in the finalization of adoptions of children from foster care. In 2016, approximately 4,600 children across the nation had their adoptions finalized at an Adoption Day event.

According to the DHS, as of Sept. 30 there were 261 children in 30 counties in western Iowa who were legally eligible for adoption because the parental rights of both parents had been terminated.
