HOLSTEIN, Iowa -- C. Ardell Downs, 84, of Holstein died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein.
Cecil Ardell Downs was born on March 29, 1928, son of Edgar Downs and Theodosia Downs, of Sac City, Iowa. He graduated from Sac City High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948. He was baptized on March 24, 1940, at the Baptist church in Sac City and later confirmed into the Lutheran church before marrying Eunice Krueger of rural Sac County, Iowa, in 1949. They were blessed with four children, Clair, Connie, Vickie, and Jeff.
After marriage, Ardell and Eunice moved to Holstein, where Ardell worked for his father in the International Harvester Implement business. Later he worked at Holstein bank before going into the insurance business.
Ardell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eunice; four children, Clair and wife, Pat from Eyota, Minn., Connie and husband, George Cortez from Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, Vickie and husband, Kevin Heck of Holstein, and Jeff and wife Jerri of Ida Grove, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Trisha and husband, Kevin Anderson, Troy Downs, Tracie and husband, Casey Wagoner, Kyle and Kelli Meyer, Gavin and Alex Downs; stepgrandchild, Kim Heck; five great-grandchildren, Jacelyn, Jonah, and Landon Anderson, Dylan and Kaleigh Wagoner; and five great-stepgrandchildren, Cy, Jaden, Emma, Anna and Sam Heck.
Ardell was met at the gates of heaven by his mother; his sister, Louise and brother-in-law, Howard Olson; his sister, Maxine Mandernach; and brothers-in-law, Page Rector and Robert Mandernach; a grandson, Trevor Downs; and stepgrandson, Kyle Heck.
