WAKEFIELD, Neb. -- Duane Bokemper, 78, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Wakefield, passed away peacefully Dec. 29, 2011, at his residence following a brief battle with mesothelioma.

Duane was born April 3, 1922, to Edward and Martha Bokemper, in Wakefield. He worked on the family farm until he was called to active duty in the Korean Conflict.

Following his discharge, he was married to Doris Fischer in Wakefield on Aug. 21, 1955, where they raised their children on the family farm. In 1968, the family moved to Lincoln, where Duane worked for the Nebraska American Legion for 26 years before retiring. He then became a handyman for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Doris; a son, Richard and his wife, Theresa Bokemper of Sergeant Bluff; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Joe Schaffer and Sally and Jim Hakel, all of Lincoln; eight grandchildren, Jake and his wife, Marisa Schaffer, Max Schaller, Michael, Laura and Brent Bokemper, Scott Bokemper and his fiancee, Alyssa Jensen, and Desirae and Nolan Hakel; and numerous other relatives and friends.
