REMSEN, Iowa | Richard J. Stoos, 71, of Remsen passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at his home, surrounded by family, after a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. William McCarthy and Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, with an escort provided by the Patriot Guard Riders and military rites conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil service and rosary at 7 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home and Monument in Remsen. Rich was born Nov. 26, 1940, the son of Henry and Margaret (Gollhofer) Stoos. He was raised and educated in Remsen. He graduated from Remsen St. Mary's High School in 1959. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on July 2, 1959, and was stationed in Camp Pendleton in California. He was honorably discharged July 1, 1963. He returned to Remsen.
He married Suzanne Snyder on Feb. 27, 1965, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, Iowa. The couple purchased Richard's Drive-Inn in 1967, and operated it as a family business until September 1986. Rich also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural route carrier from May 24, 1968, until he retired July 1, 2006.
Rich was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.
Survivors include his wife, Sue of Remsen; six children, Jeff (Bev) Stoos of Remsen and their children Jason, Zachary and Cassandra, Jodi (Nick) Ruba of Prior Lake, Minn., and their children Jordan and Ali, Brian (Sharon) Stoos of Remsen and their children Cody and Molly, Chris (Kim) Stoos of Sergeant Bluff and their children Joshua and Colby, Beth (Dave) Tentinger of Remsen and their children Danika, Madison, Brianna and Bryce Tentinger and Kara (Kelly) Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, LaNette (Thomas) Nacke of Culleoka, Tenn.; seven brothers, Larry (Cindy) Stoos of Remsen, Stanley (Rosie) Stoos of Pensacola, Fla., Robert Stoos of Remsen, Dean Stoos (friend Linda Stansberry) of Dakota City, Leo (Terri) Stoos of Hinton, Iowa, and Randy (Mary) Stoos and Doug Stoos, all of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Robert and Mary Jane Snyder; and two nephews, Michael and Keith Stoos.
Casket bearers will be Jason and Zachary Stoos, Jordan Ruba, Cody Stoos, Joshua and Colby Stoos and Bryce Tentinger.
Honorary bearers will be Cassandra Stoos, Ali Ruba, Molly Stoos and Danika, Madison and Brianna Tentinger.
