ONAWA, Iowa | Ruby Lee (Ferris) Mathes, 87, of Onawa Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with the Rev. Don Collison, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Condolences may be left online at

Ruby was born Jan. 18, 1926, in Scotland County, Mo., to Olin and Edith (Blything) Ferris. She attended school in Memphis, Mo.

She married William H. Mathes Nov. 27, 1941. Ruby and Bill lived in the Memphis and Downing, Mo., area, as well as Runnells and Turin, Iowa, and Onawa.

In Runnells, she and Bill were dairy farmers. When they moved to Onawa, they owned a gas station, a laundromat and The House of Food family restaurant.

Ruby was active in the First Christian Church ladies' auxiliary.

Survivors include daughters, Phyllis A. (Loyal) Greenstreet of Wichita, Kan., Marilyn M. (Jerry) Erlandson of Onawa, Debra J. Mathes of Onawa, Linda D. (Mike) Koziol of Bellevue, Neb., Kathy K. Mathes (significant other Russell Foote) of Mustang, Okla.; sons, Hillis F. (Claudia) Mathes of Kennard, Neb., William Keith Mathes of Henderson, Nev., and Steven P. (Lorie) Mathes of Onawa; sisters, Ruth Drummond of Kirksville, Mo., and Marietta Fowler of Greentop, Mo.; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; her brother, Wayne; and her son, Phillip.

She will be missed.
