PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Gov. Mike Rounds reduced the sentences of 270 state prison inmates who provided community service, earned a GED certificate or met other goals.
For 23 inmates, the early release came in time to be out of prison for Thanksgiving.
The sentence reductions are in 90-day, 120-day and 150-day increments, based on the inmate's achievements.
Minimum-security inmates could qualify by performing community service, helping with storm or flood cleanup, helping roof and tuck-point state buildings, and completing a GED or firefighter certification.
