A local staple of June for nearly two decades, Awesome Biker Nights represents not only a colorful two-day celebration attended by thousands, but a community-minded event producing thousands of dollars for charities.
As we have said in this space before, we recognize its popularity and commend its philanthropy.
Where, or even if, the event will happen next year is, however, unclear today.
Last month, Awesome Biker Nights posted a letter to its Facebook page in which more than a half dozen businesses located within and near the city's Historic Fourth Street District said they won't participate in the event in 2018 and requested organizers choose an alternate location. So far as we know, event organizers have made no decision about a location for next year.
We appreciate both sides of this discussion.
We understand asking private business owners, who stand to profit from Awesome Biker Nights traffic, to help cover costs. We also respect the position of businessmen and women who, for whatever reasons, do not wish to pay. We understand why some businesses want to participate and why others do not. Clearly, not every business is the same.
So what will happen?
We offer no solution to what is a dilemma, but we express hope Awesome Biker Nights, the local business community and the city will identify one so this summer tradition will continue in some form in some location next year.
We are optimistic that can happen if the power of open-minded communication and compromise is applied.
