Congressman Steve King was one of three runners-up for The Journal's “Newsmaker of the Year," partly for his involvement in the rescue of the Tanzania children.
However, The Journal's Dec. 31 article about the runners-up mischaracterized King's involvement in the story of the Tanzania children. The article credited King for “heaping praise” on others, but it failed to describe what he actually did. King secured the plane that brought the children to Sioux City for critical medical treatment and worked with multiple U.S. embassies getting passports and visas for the families. I read this in one of The Journal's May 2017 news stories about the Tanzania children.
Without King’s efforts, Wilson, Sadia and Doreen’s fate would have been much different. Let’s give credit where credit is due. Thank you, Mr. King. - Mike Hanlon, Sioux City
