LaunchPAD Children’s Museum salutes the message delivered by Charese Yanney in her Feb. 18 Regulars column about the importance of including the arts in a well-rounded education.
When LaunchPAD opened two years ago, our staff was cautious about including art in our programs and activities because we didn’t want to step on the toes of the great work being done by the Sioux City Art Center. However, what we’ve discovered is that teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) is quite often best done by using the arts such as painting, music, dance, sculpture or other creative activities. This fact is especially true for the pre-school and early elementary children LaunchPAD serves. Art is, indeed, an essential component of creating and communicating concepts within science, technology, engineering and math.
LaunchPAD is proud to add an “A” to STEM and STEAM forward into the future. - Bob Fitch, executive director, LaunchPAD Children's Museum, Sioux City
