Letters to the Editor

As a nurse and the sister of someone who died as a direct result of his mental illness, I am especially concerned about our state’s mental health crisis and the lack of resources available. I watched as our mental health services deteriorated under the Branstad/Reynolds administration that included the closure of two of the state’s mental health hospitals, leaving patients with literally nowhere to go.

I recently met and spoke with Dr. Andy McGuire at one of her campaign stops in Sac County. This issue is personal for Dr. McGuire which is why she has a seven-point plan to combat our state’s mental health and substance abuse crisis that includes removing the stigma and providing incentives to psychiatrists to practice in our state. From my conversation with Dr. McGuire, it was clear that she wasn’t just repeating political talking points, but that this is an issue that she is passionate about, and she is committed to making mental health a cornerstone of her administration.

Unlike Gov. Reynolds, I know Dr. McGuire will also be a vocal advocate for women’s health and restore family planning options and reopen clinics that provide cancer screenings for women. Dr. McGuire will also take a stronger stance against sexual harassment in the workplace and ensure that every accusation is investigated properly and in a timely manner.

I hope you will join me in voting for Dr. McGuire in the June 5 primary election. - Susan Schnirring, Sac City, Iowa
