About Sunrise Retirement Community

The year 2012 was an exciting one at Sunrise Retirement Community. We opened our new $14 million, state-of-the-art Health Center for skilled nursing care, assisted living and assisted living memory care. Based on a neighborhood delivery system, each neighborhood has its own residential kitchen and dining area, great room, fireplace and adjacent gardens. Residents enjoy their private room, each with a full bath and shower and a wireless call system for assistance. The health center features a beautiful indoor park - complete with floor to ceiling windows overlooking a courtyard with a beautiful fountain and wheelchair swing.

Adjacent to the indoor park is the chapel/community life center. Our new health center is an investment in the community, and it renews our mission to serve seniors for generations to come.

Sunrise is Siouxland’s only community based, not-for-profit retirement governed by a local volunteer board of directors. Sunrise has been leading the way in senior care for over 50 years.

The Pointe at Sunrise, our new independent living community for seniors, is a recent addition to our 35-acre campus. We are pleased to welcome new residents to this special new home. We encourage you to learn more about our many communities that make Sunrise special.

Our Mission
Caring deeply. Connecting daily. Leading boldly. Serving faithfully.

Our Vision
Forward-thinking and person-centered, Sunrise Retirement Community will be recognized as Siouxland’s highest quality, most active and comprehensive senior living community of choice.

Philosophy of Care
At Sunrise Retirement, we’re proud of our resident-centered care philosophy. It’s an approach that zeroes in on individual needs and ensures "freedom of choice" for our residents. Essentially, it means strive to be more inviting (and less institutional) in today’s world of senior care. We urge residents to enjoy more independence, privacy, and flexibility in their daily lives — and we provide each resident with what works best for him or her.

Sunrise has also embraced the Eden approach, which connects residents with children, pets, and green space to enhance their quality of life.

Not-For-Profit Organization
As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, we continually invest our resources and any annual revenue back into care and services for our residents. Sunrise Retirement is funded through Medicare and Medicaid, third party sources, and private payment. We also welcome monetary and volunteer contributions from those interested in supporting Sunrise.

Nondiscrimination Statement
With regard to admission, participation, or employment practices, Sunrise Retirement Community does not exclude, deny benefits to, or otherwise discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, national origin, disability, or age.

Medical and memory care needs of Sunrise residents have changed since we introduced the Bernstein and Sunlight Centers 25 years ago. To serve faithfully into the future, we must change, too.

We owe residents more.

Bernstein and Sunlight have aging and inefficient ventilation systems, small resident rooms, and inadequate restrooms that lack privacy. While other components of the Sunrise continuum set the standard for senior care, these facilities are no longer “best in class” in the field.

We can’t delay.

Connecting memory care residents with the beautiful chapel, indoor park, and other amenitites in the now-new Sunrise Health Cetner will enrich their experiences and ensure an edge in a competitive senior market. There is no better way to round out our services to seniors, but the longer we wait, the older our other facilities become.

We have to do better.

Especially when there are wheelchairs involved, small bathrooms provide tight quarters for caregivers to assist residents—and that’s far from ideal. By creating more spacious restrooms, we’ll provide for the safety of our staff and the dignity of our elders. We’ll also secure the very latest in ADA compliance.

We must dream bigger.

Since 1959, we’ve welcomed more than 6,000 residents to the Sunrise campus. This new and exciting trajectory allows us to serve seniors with chronic confusion alongside those with different medical conditions. This means couples could stay together when one of them is memory impaired and the other is not.

Will you help us?

Your gift will support far more than construction costs. It will secure our future…and your future, too… as we embrace life’s changes and invest in what really matters.

How can I tell if someone is having a stroke?

There are ten signs. Urgency is the best prescription for recovery of a stroke. Do not wait. Go to the Emergency Room or call an ambulance immediately if experiencing any of these symptoms. Early treatment is the best recovery.

  1. Weakness in the face, arm, or leg. Drooping, numbness or weakness of the face. Uneven smile or person is unable to move an arm or leg.
  2. Loss of balance or trouble walking. Hard to stand due to fatigue and confusion.
  3. Blurred speech. Have the person repeat a common phrase. If unable, there is an 80% chance of a stroke.
  4. Sudden vision loss. Losing 1/2 or 1/4 of the visual field and loss of peripheral vision.
  5. Dizziness. May occur one time or may be chronic.
  6. Severe headaches. This person is at high risk for strokes. Sudden severe headache out of no where is a warning.
  7. Fatigue. Persistent symptom. Sense of exhaustion and weakness that doesn’t improve with sleep or rest.
  8. Loss of swallow or gag reflex.
  9. Loss of sensation on any area of the skin. Can be one or different parts of the body.
  10. Heart palpitations. A feeling of losing your breath or a fluttering feeling in your chest. Women are more susceptible to this symptom.
