We've created a national alliance at a local level.
Learners to Leaders® is a national alliance that helps disadvantaged individuals achieve educational goals through local programs. It focuses on those who have the desire to succeed, but don't yet have the skills to overcome their challenges—whether academic, social, or economic. These are often first-generation college-bound students, low-income, or minority individuals.
This program is a collaborative effort between Smithfield and local educational and mentoring partners. It strives to create confident leaders by providing them with the skills to succeed and putting them in a position to give back to their communities. Smithfield has contributed approximately $3 million to Learners to Leaders since the program's inception.
At Smithfield Foods, we understand the benefits of proper nutrition and believe it is our responsibility to help our neighbors in need.
Feeding Families Across America
Founded in 2008, Helping Hungry Homes® is Smithfield Foods’ initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure. Helping Hungry Homes® provides nutritious, high-quality protein to food banks, school nutrition programs, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs.
We know that we have plenty of work to do, and that’s why every level of our Smithfield family is involved in this initiative—from leadership to facility employees to farmers. We stand together as proud, active partners in the fight against hunger.
Understanding Food Insecurity
Millions of children and adults experience food insecurity at times during the year, meaning access to nutritious, adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources.
- 1 in 8 people struggle with hunger in the United States.
- 1 in 6 children in the United States face hunger.
- More than 42 million Americans live in food insecure households.
We have a responsibility to be a leader in animal care.
Our Investments Are Making a Difference
We are committed to keeping animals safe, comfortable, and healthy. As the world’s largest pork producer, we have a responsibility to be a leader in animal care.
In recent years, we have taken a number of steps that have placed us at the forefront of the hog production industry in the United States. They include our pledge to convert to group housing for pregnant sows on company-owned and contract farms to our position on—and transparency around—the use of antibiotics. Our international operations adhere to rigorous local guidelines and maintain a formal Animal Care Policy that is consitent with U.S. operations.
This 8,000-sow farm in Garland, North Carolina, exemplifies our efforts at converting to group housing and providing more advanced animal housing and feed delivery systems. We’re working to improve the quality of life of the pigs while making Smithfield more competitive for the future.
