ATCHISON, Kan. | Morningside College’s baseball team posted their second doubleheader split of the season Sunday afternoon, dividing a pair with Benedictine College.
Joe Genoways was 3-for-3 as the Mustangs opened with a 3-1 win. Genoways hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, doubled in the second and singled in the third, a frame highlighted by RBI singles from Dylan Mersola and Andrew Kasperbauer.
Winning pitcher Richard Mitchell (1-1) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out nine.
Stetson Brant’s walk-off RBI single off relief pitcher Jared Sorenson with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Benedictine the 4-3 win over Morningside.
Genoways was 2-for-3 for Morningside (2-4). Genoways scored an unearned run in the second inning for a 3-all tie while earlier in the frame, Shea Patterson delivered an RBI single.
Kasperbauer hit an RBI double in the first inning. Aaron Homme allowed eight hits and a walk while striking out two.
CENTRAL METHODIST 6-1, BRIAR CLIFF 3-2: Tyler Vanderham’s two-run single in the sixth inning lifted Briar Cliff to a 2-1 win over Central Methodist in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader at Boonville, Missouri.
Sawyer Olson led Briar Cliff (2-4) at the plate, going 2-for-4. Winning pitcher Matt Wesselmann allowed six hits and a walk while striking out three.
Central Methodist won the opener, 6-3. Olson was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Chargers while Nick Robinson singled twice in two plate appearances.
Losing pitcher Andrew Stover allowed two earned runs, six hits and a walk while striking out seven.
