SEWARD, Neb. | Wade Council and Tyler Nelson each had a two-run home run to help rally No. 1 seed Concordia to a 6-5 win over Briar Cliff in the first round of the Concordia Bracket of the Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball tournament at Plum Creek Park Thursday evening.
The Chargers got off to a fast start, scoring three times in the first inning but couldn't hold the lead. Ryan Welsh led off the game for BCU with a double and got the first run when Michael Wagaman followed with a single. Brogan Secrist made it 2-0 with an RBI single and Hagan Samson plated Secrist with the third run of the inning on another single.
The Chargers loaded the bases in the ninth inning with one out but failed to get the tying run home when Desmond Pineda coaxed a pair of pop-ups to end the game.
Tanner Wauhob, a sophomore from Sioux City West, got the win for the Bulldogs, limiting the Chargers to a run over 6.1 innings of relief before Desmond took over for the save.
Avery Foltz had four hits to lead the Chargers at the plate.
Briar Cliff (18-33) plays an elimination game at 3 p.m. Friday against Mount Marty.
