ORANGE CITY, Iowa | Richard Mitchell pitched a three-hit shutout to lead Morningside to a 2-0 win over Northwestern in the first game of a Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Thursday.
The Raiders got their bats going in the second game and won 9-2 to earn a split of the set.
Mitchell walked none and struck out as he faced three batters over the minimum to improve his record t0 7-2.
The Mustangs scored both of their runs in the first inning of the opener with Cole Chapin hitting a single to plate Nolan Hoff and Blake Rogers driving home Jacob Lamoreux on a ground out.
Northwestern had a dozen his in the nightcap and led from start to finish, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by Michael Callahan. Matt Martin had three hits and drove in four runs for the Raiders (17-28 overall and 8-18 GPAC).
Morningside (31-20 overall,16-10 GPAC) scored both its runs in the second game on a two-run double by Lamoreux.
The two teams will square off in another twin bill at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park Saturday.
MOUNT MARTY 8, DORDT 6: Mount Marty used a five-run rally in the sixth inning to surge past the Defenders in the first game of a Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader in Sioux Center, Iowa Thursday.
Down 4-3 in the opener, the Lancers lashed out six hits in the sixth inning and got back-to -back rbi singles from Bo Howard and Mason Kaitfors to get the lead. Taylor Neuroth and Travis Waara had two hits apiece in the first game for Dordt and Cam Gingerich drove in a pair.
The second game was tied at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning and not complete at press time.
The two teams wrap up conference play with two more games in Yankton, South Dakota Friday.
