JOPLIN, Mo. | Noah McBride pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12 as Northwestern College’s baseball team clipped Graceland 5-2 Friday afternoon at Joe Becker Stadium.
It was a scoreless game until Northwestern (1-1) tallied three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, beginning with Dustin Gaither’s RBI single. The Red Raiders took advantage of an error and Britton Yoder, a pinch-runner for Gaither, scored the frame’s final run when Michael Callahan grounded into a double play.
Matt Martin was 2-for-3 for a club that opened the season just a few hours earlier with a 5-2 loss to Graceland.
Northwestern has two games on Saturday in Joplin. Coach Brian Wede’s squad will face Benedictine at 10:30 a.m., then Viterbo at 1 p.m.
GRAND VIEW 5, NORTHWESTERN 2: Parker Thode scattered three hits and struck out seven in six innings while leading Grand View past Northwestern Friday afternoon.
Northwestern, in its season-opener, trailed 5-0 before Reed Smith hit a two-run single with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.
David Rowley doubled to lead off the sixth for the Red Raiders. Losing pitcher Raphael DeHoyos allowed five earned runs, eight hits and one walk while striking out four in 4.1 innings.
WAYNE STATE SEASON-OPENER POSTPONED: Wayne State’s season opener at Regis was postponed because of cold weather in the Denver area on Friday. The game will be scheduled as part of a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday.
Wayne State will now open its season Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon (CST) against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs with the games played at the Air Force Academy on Falcon Field in Colorado Springs.
