COSTA MESA, Calif. | Northwestern used a big second half to pull away from Bethesda (Calif.) 90-72 in the Bill Reynolds Classic here Wednesday.

The Red Raiders trailed 42-40 at halftime, but outscored Bethesda 50-30 in the second half. Bethesda shot 9-for-31 from the field (29 percent) in the second half.

Colton Kooima scored 32 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Northwestern (14-2) and was one of four Red Raiders in double figures. Derek Buysse came off the bench to tally 15 points, while Parker Mulder and Nathan Wedel chipped in 14 points apiece.

Northwestern shot 53 percent from the field and made all 13 of its free throw attempts.

NORTHWESTERN 84, VANGUARD 82: Derek Buysse recorded a double-double and had a crucial block late in the game as the 11th-ranked (NAIA) Northwestern men’s basketball team rallied to defeat No. 22 Vanguard 84-82 here Tuesday.

Buysse scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Northwestern (13-2). Riley Francis had 20 points, Colton Kooima added 17 and Nathan Wedel finished with 16.

Jamaal Lee scored 15 points for Vanguard (9-3). Shacquille Dawkins and Connor Griffin both finished with 14 points while Brandon Brothers added 13.

Vanguard led 47-36 at halftime and by as many as 13 points early in the second half. Northwestern took the lead for good at 71-70 on a jumper by Parker Mulder. The Red Raiders had their largest lead at 79-70 after a three-pointer from Buysse with 4:25 left.

Vanguard started chipping away at the lead though. After a pair of Vangaurd free throws trimmed the Northwestern lead to 84-82 with 26 seconds left, Vanguard had a steal with 22 seconds left with the chance to tie the game. Connor Kennedy attempted a layup but was blocked by Buysse with 16 seconds left. Vangaurd missed another pair of shots as time expired.

AUGUSTANA 80, WAYNE STATE 70: Steven Schaefer scored 21 points to help lead Augustana past Wayne State in a Northern Sun Conference men's basketball game played at Sioux Falls Arena Tuesday.

The Vikings (8-4 overall and 3-3 NSIC) trailed 32-29 late in the first half but scored the final nine points of the half to lead 38-32 at the intermission. The game was tied five times before the break and there were 17 lead changes.

Augustana went on a 12-2 run in the opening minute of the second half to go ahead 15 points and led by double digits the rest of the way.

Kendall Jacks and Vance Janssen scored 12 points to lead the Wildcats (8-6 overall and 3-3 NSIC. Jordan Cornelius also scored in double digits with 10 for Wayne State.
