Conaway earns academic honor
AMES, Iowa – Four members of the Iowa State volleyball team were named to the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team. All four were named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team with the honorees being Alexis Conaway, Hali Hillegas, Jess Schaben and Samara West.
Conaway, an Orange City, Iowa native and kinesiology major, was named Academic All-Big 12 first team for the third-straight year, continuing to maintain a cumulative 4.0 GPA. She was one of four Big 12 student-athletes to be named Academic All-Big 12 with a 4.0 GPA. Conaway has averaged 2.37 kills per set, 1.66 digs per set and 1.07 blocks per set this season.
USD sweeps weekly awards
ELMHURST, Ill. — For the second consecutive week, South Dakota had four athletes sweep the Summit League Athlete of the Week awards. Junior Sarah Schank and sophomore Isaac Morris took the Diver of the Week awards, while sophomore Sabrina Sabadeanu and junior Hunter Padgett took the Swimmer of the Week awards.
For Schank, this is the third honor of the season. At the Iowa State Tri-Duals, Schank captured the three-meter dive with a score of 275.45 and finished third in the one-meter dive with a finishing score of 231.10.
Morris finished in the top five of both his dives and earns his fourth award of his career.
Sabadeanu’s performance at the Iowa State Tri-Duals earned her the second honor of her career. Individually, Sabadeanu won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 4.89 seconds.
For Padgett, this is the third time in his career receiving the award. He finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.93.
USD adds women's triathlon
VERMILLION, S.D. — University of South Dakota President James W. Abbott and Athletic Director David Herbster announced the addition of women’s triathlon as the 18th varsity sport at South Dakota for the 2018-19 academic year.
USD athletics recently received the Emerging Sport Grant through USA Triathlon. The three-year grant provides funding for NCAA Division I, II and III institutions to develop, implement, grow and sustain women’s triathlon programs.
Women’s triathlon competes in the fall season with four to six competitions per year. Women’s triathlon is a draft-legal sprint race consisting of a 750-meter swim, 20,000-meter bike ride and 5,000-meter run. South Dakota will provide three scholarships for the 2018 season with a plan to increase scholarships as participation in women’s triathlon at USD increases.
South Dakota is the 20th school in the nation to offer women’s triathlon at the varsity level, marking the halfway point triathlon’s journey to becoming a full-fledged NCAA Championship sport.
