SIOUX CITY | Morningside’s men’s basketball team rallied from a pair of 10-point first-half efforts en route to its fourth straight victory, 75-66 over Doane during Great Plains Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center/Allee Gym.
Alex Borchers led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Morningside, providing 16 points. Fellow starters Ryan Tegtmeier and Bryce Koch added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Tyler Borchers came off the bench to provide his 11th double-double of the season, contributing 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Morningside (20-7, 10-6 GPAC), which shot 51.9 percent, including 60.9 percent in the second half.
However, before veteran coach Jim Sykes could claim his seventh 20-win season at Morningside, Doane took a 23-13 lead on Reid Williams’ layup with 7:45 remaining until halftime. Brody Egger’s three-point basket 3 ½ minutes later produced a 24-23 lead.
Morningside’s 23-3 run in the final 6 ½ minutes of first half included back-to-back threes from Matthew Hahn and Brody Van Ginkel. Doane (12-16, 3-13) rallied from the 36-26 halftime deficit to pull within two points three times in the second half, but two consecutive threes from Tegtmeier followed by Alex Borchers’ jumper produced a 64-52 lead and gave the Mustangs the double-digit lead back for keeps.
Morningside will host Briar Cliff as GPAC action resumes Wednesday night.
