STORM LAKE, Iowa | Carlee Guyett's single up the middle in the ninth inning scored Kate Lesmeister with the winning run as Buena Vista outlasted Central 5-4 in the first game of an Iowa Conference softball doubleheader Thursday. The Dutch came back in the nightcap to win 6-4 and earn the split.
The Beavers outhit the Dutch 14-7 in the opener and overcame five errors to get the win. Central rallied with a pair of two-out runs to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning only the see Buena Vista's Autumn Boland slug a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the inning and tie the game at 4-4.
Moriah Guyett pitched all nine innings and got the win for Buena Vista.
Central is now 19-7 overall and 6-2 and snapped a five-game losing skid in Storm Lake with the second game win. Lesmeister had a home run in the nightcap for the Beavers (16-10 overall and 1-5 IIAC).
DORDT 3-6, COLLEGE OF ST.MARY 1-0: The Defenders picked up their first two Great Plains Athletic Conference softball wins of the season after sweeping the Flames in a doubleheader played at Heritage Park in Omaha Thursday.
Tianna Top pitched a four-hit shut out in the second game to complete the sweep for Dordt. She struck out three and walked one. Carley DeRoin, a former Westwood prep athlete, drove in three runs in the second game for the Defenders (13-14 overall and 2-6 GPAC). Rachel Evavold was the winning pitcher in the opener, scattering three hits while fanning six. Hailey Heerings had a solo home run in the first game for Dordt.
MIDLAND 3, NORTHWESTERN 2: Alexis Oden hit a walk-off single to score Andrea Cespedes with the winning run in the eighth inning as the Warriors downed the Raiders in the first game of a Great Plains Athletic Conference softball doubleheader played in Fremont, Nebraska Thursday.
Cespedes reached on a two-out single after Northwestern pitcher Kayla Tindall had recorded the first two batters in the eighth. The Raiders (22-6 overall and 7-2 GPAC) forced extra innings when Cheyenne Wilcke led off the seventh inning with a solo homer. Jensen Boger also drive in a run with a single in the fourth inning to pull the Raiders within 2-1. Tindall gave up 10 hits but also fanned 10 batters in the first game.
LUTHER 6, BUENA VISTA 4: Luther held off Buena Vista 5-4 in the second game of an Iowa Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday in Storm Lake, Iowa.
The Norse scored four runs in the first inning, then held off a late Beaver rally. Jeanne Bramhall pulled BVU within 5-4 with a solo homer in the fifth, the 14th of her career. Bramhall walked with one out in the seventh, bringing the winning run to the plate and Michaela Mason blooped a single. Bramhall was running on contact and thought about scoring, but slipped rounding third base and was tagged out trying to get back to the bag for the final out.
The Beavers (15-9, 0-5) outhit the Norse 10-5 and had five extra base hits.
