SIOUX FALLS | Doane has a three-shot lead over Morningside and Northwestern after the opening round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference men’s golf fall qualifier at Willow Run here Monday.
Doane had two players break par and totaled 283, or 1-under-par as a team. Morningside and Northwestern each posted 286 and Concordia 288.
Joe Vest of Midland fired a 4-under 67 to set the pace individually. Low scores abounded, with seven players shooting under par and six more matching par.
Justin Kraft of Northwestern shot 68, while Roger Sack of Doane had a 69 and teammate Mack Alspaugh 70. Cody Holck of Morningside was among a group of four players at 70.
Dordt’s Tony Kallevig carded even-par 71 while Briar Cliff was paced by Andy Huntington with 74. Dordt is seventh in the tightly bunched team race at 297 and Briar Cliff 10th at 305.
The second round will be played Tuesday.
