FORT WORTH, Texas -- Fifteenth-ranked Morningside defeated Bethel (Kan.) 8-3 in Saturday morning’s action in the Cowtown Classic before the rest of the softball tournament was cancelled due to cold temperatures.

The Mustangs, who had been scheduled to face Bacone in the afternoon, finished the tourney with a 2-2 record.

Morningside jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against Bethel when it plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Abby Conner delivered the big blow with a two-run double before Mackenzie Lose and Rebecca Riley had RBI singles later in the inning.

Morningside made it 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Lose led off the inning with a home run before Abby Taylor singled and came home on a RBI single by Tracey Edwards.

Edwards went 4-for-4 at the plate to pace an 11-hit Morningside offensive attack. 

Hallie Misiaszek pitched a complete-game three-hitter for her first Morningside win. Misiaszek, a transfer addition from GPAC rival Dakota Wesleyan, walked three and struck out eight.

OTTAWA 4, BRIAR CLIFF 2: Ottawa (Kan.) used a four-run first inning to downed Briar Cliff at the Cowtown Classic in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday.

Ellena Cott-Laurie had a home run and drove in three for Ottawa. Both teams managed five hits in the game. Briar Cliff scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Chargers did pick up their first win of the season late Friday when they downed Oklahoma Panhandle State 5-3. Rachele Heaton, Nicole Wiles and Brooke French all had two hits for BCU. Heaton drove in two runs. Lanae Shiley picked up the win in the circle pitching 6.2 innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs and striking out one.


UC DAVIS 3, USD 1: UC Davis made three early runs hold up in a 3-1 softball win over South Dakota at Arizona State’s Kajikawa Classic here Friday. The loss left South Dakota with an 0-3 record.

Davis scored once in the first and twice in the second. Coyote starter Alex Devers allowed just four singles while pitching into the fifth inning and Sarah Lisko faced the minimum in getting eight outs in relief.

USD’s Alyssa Fernandez hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. The Coyotes loaded the bases in the third, fourth and sixth but failed to score.

Taylor Steinfeldt was 2-for-3 and has tallied two hits in each of USD’s first three games.
