ELMHURST, Ill. | South Dakota pole vaulters Chris Nilsen and Emily Grove swept the April Summit League Athlete of the month awards announced recently by the conference.
Nilsen won the award for the fourth consecutive month after taking the NCAA lead in the pole vault after recording a 18-9.5 effort at the Sioux City Relays on April 21. Nilsen has been names to the Bowerman Award Watch List for the third straight time in April. Nilsen won five pole vault events in April and was second in the Drake Relays elite competition behind 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Sam Kendricks with a mark of 18-4.5.
Grove was named Athlete of the month for the second time and the first this season after recording a NCAA-best 15-1 effort at the Sioux City Relays. She was just the ninth collegiate woman to clear a height 15 feet or higher. She also won the five pole vault competitions in the month, including the Drake Relays (14-3.25) and top collegiate effort at the Texas Relays (14-9).
