Kalogonis takes GPAC offense honor

SIOUX CITY -- Northwestern sophomore Jacob Kalogonis rushed for 214 yards, the second most for his career, on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns to earn Great Plains Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Kalogonis, who has rushed for 1,162 yards this season, ninth most on the Red Raiders all-time chart, also caught five passes for a career-high 88 yards.

DeJong wins preseason tourney

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa | Sibley-Ocheyedan senior Hunter DeJong won the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals title at the UNI-Dome over the weekend.

DeJong beat Matthew Dunkelman by major decision 14-0 in the championship match in the 11-12 grade 220-pound bracket. He opened his tournament run with a pin and a major decision before scoring a 5-3 win over Minnesota's Cole Fibranz and a 3-1 semifinal victory over Iowa's Jacob Dykes.

It was another successful tournament for DeJong, who finished fourth at the state tournament last year, after winning a Pan-Am title over the summer.

Wyant earns GPAC weekly honor

SIOUX CITY – Morningside College’s Spencer Wyant, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound junior punter from Sergeant Bluff is the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the fourth-ranked Mustangs’ 36-15 victory against Midland University.

Wyant punted four times for an average of 44.2 yards per punt. He boomed a 56-yarder in the third quarter and two of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. Wyant has averaged 45.6 yards per punt over the last six games to raise his season’s average to 42.4 yards for the fifth highest average in the nation. Wayne State's Grisham recognized for play

WAYNE, Neb. -- Wayne State College sophomore Rachel Grisham was announced Monday afternoon as the Northern Sun Conference Goalkeeper of the Week following her play in a Wildcat win and tie to conclude the regular season over the weekend. It’s the first time that Grisham has collected NSIC Player of the Week honors.

Grisham, a 5-4 goalkeeper from Columbus, was 1-0-1 with a 0.00 goals against average in a 1-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State Friday and a 0-0 double overtime tie at Sioux Falls Sunday with a 1.000 save percentage. She was credited with two saves Friday against SMSU and accounted for eight saves in Sunday’s 0-0 tie at USF while playing all 200 minutes over the weekend. Grisham was the lone goalkeeper in the NSIC to post back-to-back shutouts over the weekend.

Augie's Tymkowicz honored by NSIC

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Augustana senior Samantha Tymkowicz was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals in two victories last week.

Tymkowicz, a Bishop Heelan grad, notched her first career hat trick against USF on Friday. Tymkowicz concluded the weekend with a goal against SMSU.

Tymkowicz is tied for third in the NSIC in goals (nine) and fourth in the conference in points (21). Tymkowicz leads the team in goals (nine), assists (three) and points (21).

Outlaws move to 5-1

WINNEBAGO, Neb. -- Weston Wood scored 27 points as the Sioux City Outlaws defeated the Great Plains Bison 96-76 in basketball action on Sunday.

JD Scholten chipped in 21 points, Marcus Watkins 16 and Martez Van Buren 12 for the Outlaws, now 5-1.

Diral Gore led the Bison (2-5) with 19 points while De Antwan Jackson had 16 and Jerral Grant 10.

Jewell, Jackson named semifinalists

IOWA CITY – University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell and junior defensive back Joshua Jackson were named semifinalists for the 2017 Bednarik Award. The award is presented annually to the nation’s best defensive player. Iowa is the only school with two Bednarik Award semifinalists. In addition, Jewell has also been named a Butkus Award semifinalist honoring the nation’s best linebacker.

Jewell (6-foot-2, 236-pounds), a native of Decorah, Iowa, has played in seven of Iowa’s eight games, leading the team with 81 tackles, which leads the Big Ten and is fourth in the nation. Jewell has led Iowa in tackles in each of the last two seasons (126 in 2015, 124 in 2016). His 2017 totals include 2.5 sacks (24 yards), 9.5 tackles for loss, four pass break-ups, one interception, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble.

Jackson (6-1, 192-pounds), a native of Corinth, Texas has started every game this season. He leads the team in passes defended with 15, which is first in the nation. He is tied for second in the Big Ten with two interceptions. Jackson also had a blocked field goal in a win over North Texas.

ISU's Spears earns honor again

IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced Iowa State sophomore linebacker Marcel Spears was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row.

A native of Olathe, Kansas, Spears played a huge role in Iowa State's fourth-straight win, a victory against No. 4 TCU on Saturday. He clinched a Cyclone victory for the second-straight week with a fourth quarter interception.

Spears, who had nine tackles and one TFL in the game, sealed the victory with a pick with 1:16 left in the contest as the Cyclones were clinging to a 14-7 lead.
