DAKOTA DUNES | Last year’s finalists have reached the semifinals of the Jividen Cup match play tournament at Dakota Dunes Country Club.
Two-time defending champion Corey Matthey and his Morningside College teammate Cody Holck are in opposite brackets after chalking up two victories apiece Saturday.
Matthey will play Alex Kazos in one semifinal at 1:30 p.m. today, while Holck will take on Jeff Donaldson. The winners meet for the championship and the semifinal losers play in the consolation match later Sunday.
Matthey, the reigning Sioux City Journal Siouxland Player of the Year, has all but wrapped up the honor for a second straight year. He advanced with victories of 5 and 4 over Tyler Kirkholm and 4 and 3 over Colin Mitchell.
Kazos won a tight 1-up match over Connor Prescott in the first round before defeating Tyler Danke 5 and 4.
Holck posted a 2 and 1 win over Keegan Bak and followed that with another 2 and 1 victory over Brian Schultz. Donaldson, meanwhile, downed Will Andersen 2 and 1 and Tyson Bodlak 4 and 3.
Play in the Leo Division (50 and over) was suspended because of darkness with two second-round matches still in progress.
Kevin Schwaderer and Bret Taylor, however, each reached the semifinals. Schwaderer sidelined defending Leo champion Brent Weitzel 4 and 3 and topped Tom Ward 6 and 3.
Taylor, in the opposite bracket, got a 4 and 3 triumph over Mark Albert and a 5 and 4 win over Gary Stieneke.
Schwaderer and Taylor’s opponents were still undetermined at press time for this edition of The Journal. Matches involving Joe Ward and Bill Mathers and Jim Tritz and Jim LeMoine will resume at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
The Jividen Cup is named in honor of the late Mike and Leo Jividen.
