NORTH SIOUX CITY | Jack Graves hit an eight-foot pull-up jumper with 2.2 seconds left to give Dakota Valley’s boys basketball team a 61-60 win over Vermillion in a Class A Region 4 game contested at the Panthers’ homecourt Friday night.
Graves scored 15 points for Coach Jason Kleis’ Panthers (16-6), which shot 50 percent in the victory. Teammate Charlie Cox added 12 points.
One of Dakota Valley’s keys to the victory was limiting Vermillion’s A.J. Plitzuweit without a 3-point basket. The Augustana recruit still scored 25 points, but Sam Ward had a team-high three 3’s and Max Mayer (14 points) missed a halfcourt shot as time ran out.
“(Plitzuweit) did not hit a 3 and we guarded him well,” said Kleis. “We switched up defenses and guarded him well.”
Vermillion finished the season with a 13-9 record.
