SLOAN, Iowa |  Carah Drees recorded a triple-double as the Westwood girls basketball team opened its season with a 61-42 win over Akron-Westfield on Tuesday in Sloan, Iowa.

Drees finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds and 13 blocks. Brenna Pike recorded a double-double for Westwood (1-0) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Andee Martin scored 15 points.

Brynn Van Eldik had 16 points for Akron-Westfield (0-1) and Brooke Koele added 11.

Westwood led 41-38 entering the fourth quarter and outscored the Westerners 20-4 in the final stanza.

SOUTH O’BRIEN 57, ALTA-AURELIA 56: Hannah Dau scored 21 points as the South O’Brien girls basketball team opened its season with a 57-56 win over Alta-Aurelia on Tuesday in Paullina, Iowa.

Taryn Hintz finished with 14 points for South O’Brien (1-0).

Lily Peterson scored 22 points for Alta-Aurelia (1-1) and Mary Barnes finished with 12.

Alta-Aurelia scored with 13.1 seconds left to take a one-point lead. After a foul, Megan Waterman made a pair of free throws to give South O'Brien the lead for good at 57-56.

NEWELL-FONDA 72, SPIRIT LAKE 47: Olivia Larsen led four Mustangs in double figures with 24 points while Megan Morenz added 13. Emma Stewart Had 12 and Jenna Coppock had 11 as Class 1A No. 8 Newell-Fonda opened the season with a win.

Spirit Lake (1-1) was led by Emma Loveall's 17 points.

POCAHONTAS 52, HUMBOLDT 40: Kaylee Shivers had 13 points, Leah Aljets 11 and Delaney Ehn 10 as the defending state champions got the win Tuesday.

Humboldt was led by Mady Lange's 10 points.

CENTRAL LYON 51, OKOBOJI 44: Okoboji had an early lead on Central Lyon but fell behind 21-20 at halftime the Pioneers would get within two twice in the final quarter but could get no closer.

Central Lyon was led by Heyden Heimensen's 15 points and Okoboji was paced by Camry Jones who had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Kallyn Stumbo also had 16 points.

DENISON-SCHLESWIG 81, ATLANTIC 54: Alex Mohr had 20 points, Jazlyn Beeck had 15 and Sarah Heilesen added 14 to help the Monarchs to the season-opening win.

GEHLEN 54, SIOUXLAND CHRISTIAN 36: Addison Weber had 19 points, Abbie Dickman had 11 and Sydney Livermore added 10 as Gehlen pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 24-13 run.
