SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa | Conner Groves scored 19 points and Sam DeMoss 17 to lead Sergeant Bluff-Luton past West 59-48 in a Missouri River Conference boys basketball game Monday.
Groves also hauled down 10 rebounds for a double-double and helped pace the Warriors to a 12-4 run in the second quarter that gave them a 32-22 lead at the half. Groves and DeMoss both played significant roles as sophomore last winter in SB-L's run to the Class 3A state final game.
Cliff McCray, also a junior, had a game-high 22 points to pace the Wolverines, who pulled to 43-38 after three quarters.
"I'm proud of the way our guys played tonight for our first game," said Sergeant Bluff-Luton coach Adam Vander Schaaf. "we have some things to work on but it was a good start."
The Warriors have another home game hosting Woodbury Central Tuesday while West will be on its home court Friday against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.
