Coaches named for NE Nebraska Classic

NORFOLK, Neb. | Bloomfield head football coach Matt Kuchar will serve an assistant coach for the Red team in the Northeast Nebraska Football Classic along with Emerson-Hubbard’s Ken Swanson and Wayne’s Russ Plager.

The sixth annual Red vs. White Northeast Nebraska Football Classic will be held Saturday, June 18, beginning at noon at Veteran’s Memorial Field in Norfolk. Darrin Suckstorf of Lutheran High Northeast will serve as Red’s head coach while the White team will be guided by Battle Creek’s Andrew Carlson.

Kuchar has compiled a 37-14 record since 2013 when he took over as Bloomfield’s head coach, guiding the Bees to the Class D2 state quarterfinals in each of the last two seasons. Plager coached Wayne to its first state playoff win in 34 seasons last fall. Swanson’s coaching career includes stops at Morrill, Coleridge and Emerson-Hubbard, where he has served as head coach since 2010.

Game officials have also been named for the Northeast Nebraska Classic. Wayne’s Daryl Lindsay and Jason Beiermann will serve as a referee and an umpire, respectively. Steve Martini of Hartington will be a line judge while another Hartington resident, Matt Sayler, will be a back judge.

National girls and women clinic at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. | The University of South Dakota will host its second annual all-girl sports clinic in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 3, with check-in for the event beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Open to girls in grades kindergarten through eighth, the free sports clinic will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. inside the DakotaDome. Members of five Coyote women’s programs (volleyball, soccer, softball, golf, track and field) will run various stations during the allotted time span.

Immediately following the clinic, the girls participating are encouraged to stick around for pizza, a guest speaker and the chance to welcome the Coyote women’s basketball game onto the court ahead of tip-off against North Dakota State. Participants will receive one free youth ticket to the women’s basketball game against North Dakota State at 1 p.m. and the Dakota Realty Alumni Track and Field meet beginning at 2 p.m.

Bellar named NSAA executive director

LINCOLN – The Nebraska School Activities Association has hired Jay Bellar, Superintendent of Schools at Battle Creek, as the next NSAA Executive Director.

As executive director of the NSAA, Bellar will be responsible for the overall administration of NSAA programs and coordination of the NSAA staff, budgeting

and finance for the association, interpretations of the NSAA Constitution & Bylaws, eligibility and hardship rulings and NSAA championship contracts.

Bellar has an extensive background in education and extracurricular activities, having served as a teacher, coach, principal and activities director before becoming Superintendent of Schools at Battle Creek, where he has served since 1998.
