Wahoo (9-1) at Wayne (7-3)

BRIEFLY: Wayne’s reward for winning its first playoff game in 34 years is a home quarterfinal game against No. 4 Wahoo. The No. 8 Blue Devils held on for a 30-28 first-round victory over Chadron and host Wahoo at Wayne State College. Wayne had a 30-12 lead over Chadron late in the third quarter before Chadron scored and then scored another touchdown in the fourth to pull within two. The Blue Devils recovered an onside kick to seal the win. Juan Vergara rushed for 180 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns and Wayne intercepted two passes to chalk up its first playoff win since a 13-10 triumph over Crete in 1983. Wahoo’s Dylan Egr rushed for 319 yards and five touchdowns on 36 carries in a 42-28 first-round victory over Kearney Catholic. The Wahoo defense recorded 12 tackles for no gain or a loss. Wahoo’s only loss is to Norfolk Catholic, 24-19, in the third week of the season.
Ponca (10-0) at Battle Creek (7-3)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m., Battle Creek, Neb.
BRIEFLY: Top-ranked Ponca gets a rematch with Battle Creek in a C2 quarterfinal contest after the Indians breezed past Doniphan-Trumbull 44-7 in the opening round. Ponca defeated Battle Creek, a perennial playoff contender, 28-20 in a game played at Battle Creek during the regular season. Dalton Tremayne rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns while Logan Kingsbury had a couple of 1-yard quarterback sneaks for scores and Carter Kingsbury returned a fumble for a touchdown. Battle Creek blanked Wilber-Clatonia 20-0 with Weston Johnson rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns. The game was scoreless until late in the third quarter. Battle Creek has won four C1 state titles but the last one was in 1992. Ponca claimed the 2009 C2 championship.
