FORT DODGE, Iowa | Fort Dodge St. Edmond's powerful rushing attack was too much for South O'Brien Friday night in a Class 1A quarterfinal football contest at Dodger Stadium.
The Gaels outscored South O'Brien 28-0 in the second half of its 42-3 victory, advancing to the state semifinals in the UNI-Dome next Saturday.
Vinnie Harvey, a senior, had four touchdowns, two in each half for fourth-ranked St. Edmond (12-0).
T.J. O'Tool, a sophomore speedster, added two long touchdown runs of 63 and 58 yards for the Gaels.
South O'Brien, closing out its best season at 10-2, reached the red zone three times in the first half, but could only come away with three points on a Duncan Schwebach field goal.
The Wolverines four possessions in the second half resulted in one punt, two interceptions and the end of the game.
NEWELL-FONDA 46, MARCUS-MERIDEN-CLEGHORN 38
MARCUS, Iowa | Gabe Podraza passed for two touchdowns and ran 55 yards for another to lead Newell-Fonda to a 46-38 win over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in an eight-man quarterfinal playoff game Friday.
Podraza connected twice for scores to Dalton Anderson to keep the Mustangs unbeaten entering a semifinal game against Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.
Quarterback Dylan Spieler passed for a touchdown and ran for two more for the Eagles. Derek Erdman hauled in one of the TD passes and also ran seven yards for a score the cut the Newell-Fonda lead to 39-32 with 9:33 left in the game.
Spieler added a 3-yard run with 4:06 left but the Eagles failed to score on a two-point conversation leaving N-F up 39-38. M-M-C missed on all but one PAT attempt to hurt its cause.
Newell-Fonda was eliminated in the quarterfinal round by the eventual state champion Eagles 42-38 last fall.
WEST LYON 21, ALGONA GARRIGAN 7
INWOOD, Iowa | West Lyon's defense limited Algona Garrigan to 85 total yards in it's Class 1A quarterfinal victory Friday night.
Jake Newborg led the Wildcats with seven solo tackles, two assisted tackles and a tackle for loss as the top-ranked club advanced to the state semifinals.
Kaleb Heyer contributed three solo tackles, five assisted tackles and two tackles for loss to the West Lyon victory.
Bennett Feuchtenbuerger rushed 23 times for 108 yards while quarterback Brandon Snyder had 74 yards rushing, including a 4-yard touchdown run. Snyder also threw a touchdown pass of 25 yards to Heyer as West Lyon led 21-0 at halftime.
Kyle Groeneweg scored the first Wildcats touchdown on a 3-yard run in the first quarter.
West Lyon (12-0) will face Avoca AHST (12-0) in a 1:06 p.m. Friday semifinal at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
