LARCHWOOD, Iowa | Hinton scored 21 unanswered points while rallying for a 28-12 upset victory over No. 1-ranked (Class A) West Lyon Friday night.
Both teams forced four turnovers, but Hinton (2-1) set up touchdowns with two of the takeaways. Morgan Wenzel’s 52-yard interception return to West Lyon’s 28-yard line late in the second quarter led to Wenzel’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Jason Vander Kooi, 15 seconds before halftime that gave the Blackhawks a 15-12 halftime lead.
Dalton Becker scored Hinton’s final two touchdowns, catching a 44-yard pass in the third quarter and returning an interception 80 yards to paydirt with3:03left in the game.
Wenzel completed 15 of 30 passes for 258 yards while also rushing for 62 yards and a 29-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Vander Kooi had five catches for 101 yards.
Tyler Van Middendorp rushed 12 times for 110 yards for West Lyon (2-1), including an eight-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Quarterback Brandon Snyder added 79 yards total offense and gave the Wildcats a 12-7 lead when he rushed for a one-yard run with 8:43 left in the second quarter.

SOUTH O’BRIEN 35, GEHLEN 7
PAULLINA, Iowa | Zach Nieman rushed for 120 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead South O’Brien to a 35-7 win over Le Mars Gehlen Catholic in a Class 1A District 1 matchup Friday.
Cody Nelson also ran for a score and passed a 29-yard touchdown strike to Matt Devos as the Wolverines won for the third time in as many starts this season. Blake Wiltgen scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Jays (0-3).
LAWTON-BRONSON 50, WEST SIOUX 7
HAWARDEN, Iowa | Freshman Anteres Ashley rushed for 129 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Lawton-Bronson to a 50-7 win over West Sioux in a Class A District 1 contest Friday.
Ashley scored on runs of 30 and 19 and teammate Blake Sappingfield also scored twice on runs of 46 and 19 yards as L-B won for the third time. Kyle Petersen also had 104 yards receiving and scored on passes of 25 and 79 yards. Steve Adams also had four catches 80 yards and Connor Clark wrapped up the Eagle scoring with a one-yard td run.
Justin Negaard scored on a five-yard run for West Sioux (0-3).
ALTA-AURELIA 14, SIBLEY-OCHEYEDAN 0
SIBLEY, Iowa | Joe Napierala scored a rushing touchdown to help lead Alta-Aurelia past Sibley-Ocheyedan 14-0 in a Class A District 1 opener for each team Friday. The Warriors won for the first time in three games while the Generals are now 1-2 overall.
SHELDON 35, UNITY CHRISTIAN 0
ORANGE CITY, Iowa | Chris Balster rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another as Sheldon defeated Unity Christian 35-0.
Balster rushed 13 times for 78 yards for Sheldon (2-1) and completed five of seven passes for 175 yards, including an 82-yarder to Nathan Oostra in the first quarter. Oostra tallied three receptions for 126 yards.
Darin Greenfield and Tanner Whitsell each tallied six tackles, including two tackles for loss for Greenfield and a half tackle for loss for Whitsell.
Logan Schoonhoven led Unity Christian (0-3) in rushing with 96 yards on 16 carries.
FORT DODGE SE 56, MVAO 20
MAPLE VALLEY, Iowa | Alex Mericle ran for 177 yards on 37 carries and five touchdowns Friday for Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Mericle had touchdown runs of two, 25, one, five and three yards for the Gaels (3-0).
Derik Bailey scored on a one yard touchdown run for Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto (2-1). Kyle Hardisty caught a 21 yard touchdown pass, and Brody Castan caught a 20 yard touchdown pass.
WAKEFIELD 22, STANTON 12
WAKEFIELD, Neb. | Josh Dolph ran for two touchdowns and Justin Dorcey added another as Wakefield topped Stanton Friday. Dolph ran for 107 yards on 13 carries for Wakefield (2-0) and Dorcey added 64 yards on twelve carries.
Stanton (0-2) scored on a three yard run by Houston Huff and a 15 yard touchdown pass to Cody Carlson from Adam Krentz. Brennan Borgmamn led Stanton with 51 yards on 15 carries.
CROFTON 38, PONCA 12
CROFTON, Neb. | Adam Spady and Alex Jansen scored two touchdowns each to lead Crofton (2-0) to a 38-12 win over Ponca Friday. Sam Burki scored twice on runs for Ponca (0-2).
TRI-VALLEY 52, ELK POINT-JEFFERSON 14
COLTON, S.D | Logan Koopman rushed for 236 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Tri-Valley to a 52-14 win over Elk Point-Jefferson Friday.
Elk Point-Jefferson quarterback Brock Zeller passed for a score and rushed for another and recorded a safety to account for the Huskie points.
